Sun Protection

There are two types of ultraviolet rays that cause skin damage. UVA rays increase the risk of skin cancer, premature skin aging and sunburn. UVB rays cause sunburn. SPF refers to protection from sunburn caused by UVB rays. Broad Spectrum refers to protection against UVA rays.

No sunscreen is completely protective. To minimize the risk of burns, skin cancer and premature skin aging, wear sun protective clothing, stay in the shade, and avoid sun exposure when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher (the maximum designation is 50+) and the Broad Spectrum designation. Choose a water resistant product if you plan to swim or engage in activities that will result in heavy sweating.

Sunscreens may be labeled as water resistant with a designation of 40 minutes or 80 minutes. No sunscreens are water proof.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
